Interim restrictions
All the healthcare regulatory bodies have postponed and/or cancelled fitness to practise panels and tribunals. However, as we have commented on recently, fitness to practise has not stopped during this time. Healthcare regulators have set out how they will continue to regulate amidst the Covid-19 outbreak. Whilst fitness to practise panels and tribunals are postponed, focus will be on continuing to review existing sanctions and consideration of new interim restrictions where necessary.
Remote hearings
Healthcare regulatory bodies have all put in place arrangements to conducts fitness to practise business remotely.
For example, the Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC) said it will “progress as many cases as possible by meetings (hearings on the papers) or by virtual hearings”, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) said: “hearings will be heard using Skype for Business or be considered by a Legally Qualified Chair on the papers”. The General Dental Council (GDC) stated: “We aim to run the urgent hearings remotely whenever possible…” and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) said “Investigating Committee meetings will proceed remotely.”
